The largest party UMNO in the ruling coalition on Thursday announced it would withdraw support to Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

Malaysia – After a year, the political crisis has started again in Malaysia. The Umno, the largest party in the ruling coalition, on Thursday, announced it would withdraw support to Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin. Umno president Ahmed Zahid Hamidi has urged Yassin to clear the way for a new leader immediately. The political bombardment has threatened a government collapse if Yassin, who took power in March last year, fails to step down, leaving Malaysia facing a general election for the second time in three years.

Yassin took power last year following the fall of a reformist government that won the 2018 general election. His Berastu party had joined the United Malays National Organization (UMNO), which lost the 2018 elections.

Apart from this, the government was formed by joining many parties, but this coalition had only a slight edge in front of the required majority. UMNO president Ahmed Zahid Hamidi on Thursday accused Yassin’s government of failing to curb the coronavirus. At the same time, he also accused Yassin of deepening the economic crisis due to turbulent politics and asked him to step down so that someone else can be appointed interim prime minister till the general elections are held after the pandemic.

However, UMNO’s decision is surprising because Yassin had declared an MP of this party as his deputy prime minister just hours before the announcement of his withdrawal.
