Biden points to Facebook for misinformation about vaccines They are killing people

US President Joe Biden has charged against social networks such as Facebook by stating that disinformation about the pandemic and the vaccines circulating on these platforms “is killing people.” These same accusations were made in 2019 by the White House.

Asked by journalists about his message to groups such as Facebook in relation to misinformation about Covid-19, the president has been exhaustive: “They are killing people.”

The Biden administration has dramatically toughened its tone this week against big tech groups, calling on them to fight more against false information about coronavirus vaccines. Those same technological groups are the ones that launched a brutal campaign against Donald Trump, who they vetoed – and to this day he is still banned – for throwing hoaxes and misinformation about the coronavirus. It seems that, despite the change of president, these social networks are still unable to put an end to fake news.

“There are around 12 people who are producing 65% of the misinformation against vaccines on social media platforms. All remain active on Facebook, although some have even been banned from other platforms,” owned by Facebook, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Thursday, without naming names.

“ Facebook needs to be faster to remove dangerous and rule-breaking messages, messages that break its rules often persist for days. It’s too much time. Information travels too fast, “he added.

Mark Zuckerberg’s group defended itself, claiming to have already removed “more than 18 million pieces of disinformation about Covid ” and “distributed reliable information about Covid-19 and vaccines to more than 2 billion people.”

The United States is working to relaunch coronavirus vaccination, particularly in light of the rapid spread of the delta variant. According to health authorities, the current increase in infections and deaths from Covid-19 throughout the country is almost exclusively affecting people who remain unvaccinated.

“There is a clear message that is getting through: this is becoming a pandemic of the unvaccinated,” Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), told reporters on Friday.

Many of those who refuse to inoculate, despite the easy availability of doses throughout the  United States, have said they do not trust vaccines.

Skepticism is being fueled both by fake posts by anti-vaccine activists on social media and by Republican politicians who claim that vaccines are part of the government’s attempts to control.
