The rumors about the equipment of the upcoming Galaxy S22 series are not diminishing. New information now suggests that Samsung could raise the camera of the Galaxy S22 to another level and thus strengthen a special area in particular.
Earlier leaks and tips on the Galaxy S22 series indicated a massive 200 MP sensor developed in-house. The well-known Leaker Ice Universe rated this super camera as highly unlikely, at least for the Galaxy S22 standard model.
On Twitter, he now also indicates that Samsung will introduce a 50 MP RGBW sensor next month in addition to the 200 MP sensor. The well-known user Yogesh added that this special sensor will be used on the Galaxy S22, among other things. Especially the performance in poor lighting conditions could improve noticeably as a result.
Should Samsung introduce new camera sensors in September, the information suggests that the 200 MP sensor could appear in some competitors such as Xiaomi and Co., while the 50 MP sensor can be found in at least one S22 model. In this case, the reason for this is likely to be Samsung’s own strategy of not wanting to take part in the newly ignited megapixel race by the Chinese manufacturers.
With the new RGBW variant, the Korean manufacturer could still take its camera setup to the next level. Instead of subpixels in the typical three colors red, green, and blue, an additional pixel would be available for white. The result: better performance in poor lighting conditions with less noise and higher brightness in particularly high-contrast scenarios.
This solution is not completely new. Huawei introduced a “four-color” RGBW sensor with a white subpixel as early as 2015 and later an RYYB variant with yellow pixels. Both methods ensure a much higher sensitivity to light. This is additionally supported by the deliberately reduced 50 MP resolution and the resulting larger individual pixels.
It is not yet certain in which model the new camera lens will fit. We’ll probably see this version more in the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 +, while the manufacturer is concentrating on improving the 108-megapixel camera for the Ultra model. Since the introduction of the flagship series with the Galaxy S20 Ultra, Samsung has been working on the performance of the high-resolution main sensor.
