European Union to freeze the assets of Russian President

The US Treasury Department announced late Friday the imposition of economic sanctions on Putin and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Earlier, 11 members of the Russian Security Council, ruling leaders, and nobles have been banned.

After Russia’s attack on Ukraine, the Union of European Countries-EU has announced strict sanctions on Russia. Now America has also supported the EU in these sanctions. It has been told that so far a total of 30 countries, including the US, have come forward to impose sanctions against Russian President Vladimir Putin and his high officials. These sanctions are likely to cause further economic and diplomatic damage to Russia.

The US Treasury Department announced late Friday the imposition of economic sanctions on Putin and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Earlier, 11 members of the Russian Security Council, ruling leaders, and nobles have been banned.

A total of 30 countries have imposed sanctions against Putin and Russian businessmen and nobles after the announcement of sanctions by the US. These include all 27 member countries of the European Union (EU) – Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Sweden are included. Apart from this, Britain and Canada are two more countries, which have imposed sanctions on Russia and Putin.

Under the sanctions imposed by the US and the EU, the assets of Putin and his officials established in the US, EU, UK, and Canada will be confiscated. In the US, people on the banned list will also be banned from traveling. It is worth noting that such steps had not been taken by the western countries so far. However, despite these sanctions, Russia has said that it already expected these steps.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said at a meeting between the leaders of the countries involved in the NATO alliance that his government would personally impose sanctions against Russian leaders to overturn the post-Cold War global order. Johnson also called for immediate action to remove Russia from the ‘Swift’ payment platform so that maximum damage can be done to the Russian government.
