People living in quarantine (isolation) centers at the community level are facing a frightening situation here. Several people, including a woman named Bebei (30), shared the experience, saying they were kept in a high-ceilinged center with rows of cots and thousands of strangers sleeping under one roof. Here the lights are on for 24 hours and even hot water is not available for bathing. There is neither cleanliness nor basic facilities in this center.
Investment bank Nomura and CNN reported that 44 cities in China have been completely or partially locked down. Millions of people in the country are imprisoned in their homes. Even food items are not reaching the people. Government officials are not able to provide basic facilities to the people. People are forbidden from leaving their homes in Shanghai. On social media, people can be seen screaming from the windows of the houses.
China’s economic growth rate grew at a weak 4.8 percent in the first quarter of 2022. Due to the lockdown in major industrial cities including Shanghai, there was a weakness in the growth figures. The Chinese government has set a target of 5.5 percent growth during the current year.
According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the country’s GDP grew by 4.8 percent year-on-year between January and March, from four percent in the previous quarter. Spokesperson Fu Linghui believes that China has made steady progress with steady improvement. He said the economy is showing some pressure and the key indicators have shown slow growth.
