QUAD to launch tracking system to monitor illegal fishing by China

In order to stop the arbitrary and aggressive activities of China in the Indo-Pacific region, now the Quad, a group consisting of America, Japan, India, and Australia, has decided to launch a new tracking system. The four countries will unveil a joint initiative on Tuesday during a meeting in Tokyo, Japan, to help track China’s activities in the region and understand its plans.

Under the initiative that the Quad group is about to launch, China’s illegal fishing activities will be tracked. In such a situation, it is important to know why the Quad would focus its surveillance capability on its fishing activities instead of directly talking about China’s spying activities in the sea.

It is important to know why this group will focus surveillance on China’s fishing vessels. Actually, China has been continuously sending these same fishing vessels for surveillance from Korea to Japan and India. According to Japan’s Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF): Information from the Center for Island Studies, China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) illegally enters other countries’ borders through fishing boats. China takes advantage of this mechanism in two ways.

According to the institute, China has the largest fishing fleet in the world. Through this, China tries to prove its diplomatic claims from the East China Sea to the South China Sea. Through this, China also crosses the maritime border of countries like Japan, Vietnam, and the Philippines, so that they can claim their maritime territory as well.

Many times the Chinese Navy sends its surveillance ships to spy on other countries on the pretext of these fishing boats. These surveillance ships are completely under the control of the Chinese military. South Korea and Ecuador have reported several such cases in the past three years when together 300-500 Chinese fishing boats were seen within their maritime borders. Ecuador even complained that Chinese ships were being monitored in its Exclusive Economic Zone or EEZ.

US President Joe Biden, Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, India’s PM Narendra Modi, and Australia’s newly-elected PM Anthony Albanese will launch their new plan after the summit on Tuesday, a US official told news portal Financial Times. The official claimed that China is currently responsible for 95 percent of illegal fishing incidents in the Indo-Pacific.

Under this initiative, work will be done to connect surveillance centers in Singapore, India, and the Pacific Ocean with satellite technology and create a one-of-a-kind tracking system, which will help in illegal fishing from the Indian Ocean and South-East Asia to the South Pacific.
