UNGA mentions Hindi for first time in multilingualism resolution

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has approved India’s proposal for the Hindi language. This announcement was made on Friday. Apart from this, Bengali and Urdu languages ​​have also been included. Now all the work and important messages of the UN will be presented in these languages ​​as well. India has supported this decision.

Apart from this, Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the 6 official languages ​​of the United Nations, with English and French being the main ones.

India’s Permanent Representative to UNGA Ambassador TS Tirumurti said that for the first time this year, Hindi language has also been included in the resolution, which also mentions Bangla and UrduWe welcome these changes. He said- India is partnering with the Department of Global Communications (DGC) of the United Nations since 2018. It is also giving funds to broadcast and mainstream the news and multimedia content of the United Nations in the Hindi language.

Many efforts have been made to promote Hindi. For this, the ‘Hindi@UN’ project was launched in 2018, with the goal of increasing public access to the Hindi language of the United Nations and providing more and more content to Hindi-speaking people around the world.

Tirumurti also referred to the resolution 13(1) of the UNSC adopted in the first session on February 1, 1946. It said that the United Nations cannot achieve its objectives unless the people of the world are fully aware of its goals. He further said that it is imperative that multilingualism is adopted in the true sense in the United Nations and India will support the United Nations in achieving it.
