Biden announces $20 Mn to assist Sri Lanka for food security

US President Joe Biden announced new aid to help Sri Lanka at the G7 summit in Germany. The US has announced an additional $20 million in aid to Sri Lanka for food security.

US President Joe Biden has announced help to Sri Lanka, which is facing an economic crisis due to a lack of foreign exchange. Joe Biden has announced an additional USD 20 million in aid for food security in Sri Lanka. He made this announcement during the G7 summit in Germany.

This aid will be used to feed more than 800,000 children and 27,000 pregnant and lactating women in Sri Lanka over the next 15 months. The US embassy said Biden announced the new aid at the G7 summit in Germany. With this assistance given by America, a school nutrition program will be started. In addition, food vouchers will be given to pregnant and lactating women with the aim to strengthen food security in Sri Lanka. There are also plans to support about 30,000 farmers through agricultural aid and cash contributions to increase food production in vulnerable communities in Sri Lanka.

US Ambassador Julie Chung said in Sri Lanka that President Biden’s announcement of an additional $20 million to Sri Lanka demonstrates America’s continued commitment to food security, public health, and the economic well-being of all Sri Lankans.

The ambassador said in a statement that the US will continue to support Sri Lanka’s efforts to promote economic stability. He went on to say that the United States will ensure that it reaches the communities and children who need it most.

Earlier on Monday, Sri Lanka facing an economic crisis, an order was issued by the government to operate only essential services till July 10. The government on Monday announced that only essential services will operate from midnight today till July 10 and all other operational services will remain temporarily suspended. Actually, Sri Lanka is facing an acute shortage of fuel due to a lack of foreign exchange.
