On Thursday, Walmart declared its plan to install electric vehicle charging stations in thousands of its stores across the United States by 2030.
Walmart has announced that it will expand its EV fast-charging network to its stores and Sam’s Club locations throughout the United States. Currently, the company has almost 1,300 EV stations at 280 of its locations, and it plans to add thousands more by 2030. However, Walmart has not disclosed any further information on the investments for this expansion.
Walmart has stated that it is currently identifying suppliers to own and operate electric vehicle charging stations in its national network. The retailer plans to have an average of four chargers installed at each participating store. Over the last two years, Walmart has significantly expanded its network of EV chargers by collaborating with EV charger providers such as EVgo and Electrify America.
Vishal Kapadia, Senior Vice President of Energy Transformation, stated that the availability of on-the-go charging is a game-changer for drivers who have been hesitant to buy an EV due to concerns about finding a charger in a clean, bright, and safe location when needed, according to a statement.
Kapadia said that the planned expansion would enhance the reliability of EV ownership. Walmart’s vast network of over 4,700 stores and 600 Sam’s Clubs are located within a 10-mile radius of approximately 90% of the US population, according to the company.
The Biden administration’s recent announcement of a $7.5 billion investment to establish a national charging network, particularly in rural and lower-income areas, is expected to bolster sales of electric vehicles. According to recent data, EV sales accounted for 7% of new U.S. vehicle registrations in January.
