Nokia and Apple Extend Patent License Agreement, Including 5G and Other Technologies

Nokia, a leading provider of network infrastructure and 5G technology, has entered into a new long-term patent license agreement with Apple. This agreement serves as a replacement for the existing deal between the two companies, which is scheduled to expire by the end of 2023.

In a recently announced agreement, Apple has secured the rights to utilize Nokia’s technology in its products. This deal encompasses Nokia’s innovations in 5G technology and other related areas. The specific terms of the agreement, disclosed on Friday, have not been publicly revealed due to their confidential nature. Nokia anticipates recognizing revenue associated with this agreement starting from January 2024. The company has stated that this deal aligns with its long-term outlook, as disclosed in the first quarter.

Nokia Technologies President, Jenni Lukander, stated that the new agreement highlights the robustness of Nokia’s patent portfolio, its extensive investments in research and development (R&D), and its significant contributions to cellular standards and other technological advancements. The previous license agreement between Apple and Nokia was initially announced in May 2017, marking the continuation of their collaborative partnership.

Nokia has emphasized that its patent portfolio is the result of substantial investments in research and development, amounting to over 140 billion euros (USD 153 billion) since 2000. This extensive portfolio comprises approximately 20,000 patent families, including more than 5,500 patent families that are declared essential to 5G technology.

Nokia, headquartered in Espoo, Finland, stands as a prominent global supplier of 5G technology, the latest advancement in broadband technology. Alongside Ericsson from Sweden, Huawei from China, and Samsung from South Korea, Nokia plays a significant role in shaping the 5G landscape as one of the leading suppliers in the industry.
