According to sources, Google is launching a pilot program on Wednesday that involves limiting internet access for certain employees. Initially, over 2,500 employees were chosen to participate, but the program was revised based on feedback. Employees are now given the option to opt out, and volunteers are also welcome to participate. As part of the program, Google will disable internet access on specific desktop computers, excluding internal web-based tools and Google-owned platforms such as Google Drive and Gmail. The company clarified that exceptions will be made for employees whose job responsibilities require internet access.
Furthermore, certain employees will have restricted privileges, including no root access, which means they will be unable to perform administrative commands or tasks such as software installations. The objective behind this initiative, as outlined in internal materials, is to mitigate the risk of cyberattacks. Google acknowledges that its employees are often targeted by such attacks. The internal description viewed by CNBC emphasized the potential consequences of a compromised device, highlighting the risks of unauthorized access to user data and infrastructure code. The description stressed that such incidents could lead to significant consequences and undermine user trust in the company.
The program’s purpose, as described, is to prevent attackers from executing unauthorized code remotely or accessing data easily. This move is particularly relevant as companies confront increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks. Just last week, Microsoft reported a significant breach where Chinese intelligence hacked into email accounts belonging to numerous government agencies, including the State Department, in the U.S. and Western Europe. It is worth noting that Google has been actively seeking U.S. government contracts since establishing its public sector division last year.
Additionally, Google’s implementation of this program coincides with its efforts to enhance security as it prepares for a companywide launch of several artificial intelligence tools. The company has also been making increased endeavors in recent months to prevent data leaks. A Google spokesperson emphasized the company’s commitment to prioritizing the safety of its products and users, stating, “Ensuring the safety of our products and users is one of our top priorities. We consistently explore methods to strengthen our internal systems against malicious attacks.”
