Meta’s Threads app, similar to Twitter, is set to receive a search function, and users will soon be able to access it via the web. In a recent Threads post on Friday, Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared the exciting news, confirming that these new features will be rolled out within the next few weeks. Zuckerberg expressed, “Threads had a fantastic week! The community’s growth is exactly what I envisioned to establish a thriving, long-term app.”
In July, Meta launched Threads to a wave of excitement, propelling the app to high rankings as Zuckerberg capitalized on Twitter’s challenges, now known as X, and the mounting criticism directed at principal owner Elon Musk. However, over the past few weeks, engagement on Threads has notably declined, as the initial novelty faded, and some users expressed frustration with the app’s limited functionality.
According to feedback from advertisers and creators shared with CNBC, for Threads to establish itself as a significant service, it must incorporate features that facilitate searching for trending topics and locating previous posts. Additionally, offering web access to Threads is crucial if Meta aims to compete effectively with X, which has long enjoyed popularity among desktop users, especially in work environments.
During Meta’s earnings call last week, Zuckerberg expressed his strong optimism regarding Threads’ future, emphasizing that it was developed by a small team. However, he clarified that the company does not plan to monetize the app until it achieves significant growth and becomes more firmly established. Despite acknowledging the challenges ahead, Zuckerberg also conveyed his excitement about the team’s swift progress in rolling out new features.
