
Russia was voted out of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in a vote held at the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday. During the voting, 93 votes were cast against Russia, and 24 in favor. 58 countries including India stayed out of voting. After the Bucha attack, a meeting of the UN General Assembly was called today. In this meeting, voting was done to get Russia out of UNHRC. The UNHRC consists of 47 member countries. This organization was formed in 2006. Russia is the second country out of it. Earlier in 2011, Libya was ousted from the institution after it removed long-time incumbent Mohammad Gaddafi from power.
India has been absent during the voting in the UNSC on all resolutions condemning Russia’s attack on Ukraine. Last month, Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said – We at the United Nations take a cautious and such approach which is based on ideas. We will definitely consider the condemnation motion but will take a decision keeping in mind our own interests.
Earlier, the G7 issued a statement saying that the time has come to expel Russia from the United Nations Human Rights Council. NATO countries including America had started preparing for it.
The United States has announced a ban on the two daughters of Russian President Vladimir Putin after a Russian attack in Ukraine killed a large number of civilians. The US said that both Putin’s daughters work with the government in Russia, so this decision has been taken.
US Parliament demanded an investigation into the war crimes taking place in Ukraine. A bill for this was voted on Wednesday night. 418 lawmakers voted in support, while 6 Republican lawmakers voted against the proposal.
The US, upset with India’s stand on the war, has warned India. The US said that India will have to pay a heavy price in the long run if it strikes an alliance with Russia. America says that India should limit its relations with Russia. India should not even buy oil from Moscow amid sanctions imposed on Russia due to the attack on Ukraine.
