Survey finds 62% of Americans believe that AI will have an impact on job security

The rising popularity of artificial intelligence (AI) models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT has raised concerns about their potential to replace human workers. Amidst debates about the effectiveness of such computer models, people are left with a single question: will the adoption of AI lead to widespread job loss?

Despite the assurance of tech industry leaders like Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy, who believe that AI models like ChatGPT can never replace human intelligence, there are concerns about its impact on jobholders. A Pew Research report reveals that 71% of Americans are against using AI in making final hiring decisions, while a majority are also opposed to using AI in laying off employees. Here are the key findings of the Pew Research report on AI and employability.

Approximately 47% of Americans have faith in the capability of artificial intelligence to evaluate job applications more effectively than humans, while 15% believe that technology will perform worse than human evaluators.

The majority of Americans believe that the implementation of artificial intelligence in the workplace will have an impact on workers in general. However, only a small percentage believe that it will have a significant impact on their own job.

According to the Pew Research report, while 62% of Americans believe that the use of AI will have a significant impact on workers over the next 20 years, only 28% of them believe that AI will personally affect them.

The Pew Research report states that 32 percent of Americans believe that the benefits and drawbacks of AI will be equally distributed among workers. Meanwhile, 22 percent are uncertain about its effects. Regarding personal impact, 38 percent are unsure about the outcome of AI use in their workplace. Three in ten people believe that AI use will have an even effect on them.

According to the Pew Research report, a survey was conducted on 11,004 American adults between December 12 and 18, 2022 to explore work-related activities related to hiring processes, employee monitoring and evaluation efforts, and the use of face recognition. The report set a framework for the findings. The survey found that 55 percent of American adults oppose the idea of employers using data collected on their job performance to determine who should be fired.

The report indicates that adults are generally against the use of artificial intelligence by employers to monitor workers’ activities, including their movements and computer usage during work hours. Specifically, 39 percent of the respondents oppose this use of AI, 31 percent support it, and 29 percent are unsure.

Approximately 43 percent of adults support the use of AI by employers to monitor employees’ driving behavior while on company trips. Additionally, two-thirds of Americans, or 66 percent of the adult population, would not apply for a job if the hiring decisions were made by AI.
