Britain has administered more than 51 million vaccines and is the second-fastest country to administer the first dose to at least half of the adult population.
Clive Dix, the government’s late vaccine task force chief, told the Daily Telegraph on Friday, the new Coronaviruses will no longer air in the UK by August. “Rarely in August, we will have no circulating virus in the UK”, Dix said, believing that the vaccine booster program could be pushed back as early as 2022.
The government is looking at which COVID-19 vaccines will offer the best booster shot for vulnerable people later this year. Dix told the Telegraph that he hoped everyone could be vaccinated at least once in the UK by the end of July, by which time “we will probably be protecting the population from all the variants that are known.”
The UK has administered more than 51 million vaccines and has become the second-fastest country to deliver the first dose to at least half of the adult population. British officials said that people under the age of 40 should be offered an alternative to the COVID-19 vaccine of Oxford / AstraZeneca, were possible because of a small risk of blood clots.
The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunization (JCVI) said the advice reflected low levels of coronavirus infection in the UK and the availability of other vaccines administered by Pfizer and Modern. Dix, who was appointed as the interim leader of the task force in December, dropped out of his role last week.
